Today when he celebrates his birthday, Rajesh Roshan must be reminiscing that he is now last of the musicians who gave a new idiom to music in the Hindi films. He grew up at a time when the music industry was flush with talent, with the likes of RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, and Bappi Lahiri, etc. all. While Bappi Lahiri is still around, it is only Rajesh Roshan who continues to give music and create hit after hits in his oeuvre. Besides, Lucky Ali, though he had made a mark as a singer, got his first break as a playback singer in KAHO NA PYAAR HAI. The famous road song, which could be one of the first road songs of Hindi film, KAALA PATTHAR, Ek Rasta hai Zindagi… was his creation.
He is the only music director, whose music when it plays, it is very difficult to predict whether it is RD Burman or Rajesh Roshan, as he could play with the instruments with the same finesse as RD could. In fact he could be considered as the poor producer's RD, i.e. those who could not get the dates of RD, or could not afford RD went to Rajesh Roshan and he never let any of the persons who came to him down with his music. Kishore Kumar's biggest tongue twisting song's, Jo Dekhen Jo chahen wo karke dikha dein from DO AUR DO PAANCH was also from the quiver of Rajesh Roshan. The music that he learned from his father Roshan he used in his career with great finesse, especially the classical music that he has given has a distinct Roshan taste. The touch of Roshan is also evident if one listens to his songs carefully, it would be found that interludes in his previous songs, find expression as a full-fledged song in a subsequent film, thereby signifying the rich resource base of music that he has at his command. It is a loss of the Hindi film music that Rajesh Roshan now gives music only for the films produced by his brother Rakesh Roshan. In this age, where the music is more a product of computer keys and software it is the music of Rajesh Roshan that is needed to bring an influence of calmness which his music personifies.
