Rajesh Roshan: Last of the Musicians

24th May 2007

Today when he celebrates his birthday, Rajesh Roshan must be reminiscing that he is now last of the musicians who gave a new idiom to music in the Hindi films. He grew up at a time when the music industry was flush with talent, with the likes of RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, and Bappi Lahiri, etc. all. While Bappi Lahiri is still around, it is only Rajesh Roshan who continues to give music and create hit after hits in his oeuvre. He was the man who contributed towards the success of his nephew Hrithik Roshan with the lilting music that he gave for KAHO NA PYAAR HAI, as it was to his music that Hrithik created an image as the dancing star.

The music still continues to rule the roost. His knack for the unconventional was what made him Preeti Sagar sing a whole song in English, in a Hindi film, and it was the first time that this happened. Here JULIE is being talked about; whose range of songs from pure English to pure classical was example of the command and the knowledge that he had of his subject. Rajesh Roshan's knack for picking up unconventional voices as he did with Preeti Sagar in JULIE again got manifested when he could convince Deven Verma to sing a song in DOOSRA AADMI, ‘Maathe Pe Lagaike Bindiya’, which is one of the better classical songs of a Hindi movie. Incidentally, it was also the film where Pamella Chopra sang in the female voice. He is also the first under whose baton Leela Mishra the famous character actor sang the song of BATON BATON MEIN, ‘Uthe sabke kadam’. Besides, Lucky Ali, though he had made a mark as a singer, got his first break as a playback singer in KAHO NA PYAAR HAI. The famous road song, which could be one of the first road songs of Hindi film, KAALA PATTHAR, Ek Rasta hai Zindagi… was his creation.

He is the only music director, whose music when it plays, it is very difficult to predict whether it is RD Burman or Rajesh Roshan, as he could play with the instruments with the same finesse as RD could. In fact he could be considered as the poor producer's RD, i.e. those who could not get the dates of RD, or could not afford RD went to Rajesh Roshan and he never let any of the persons who came to him down with his music.

In fact Dev Anand who was a RD fan selected Rajesh Roshan to give music to number of his films, and the music that he gave in LOOT MAAR, MAN PASAND, SWAMI DADA were all hits. Though he did not have a Gulzar, to give him the lyrics, which RD had the luxury to play with, and experiment in his music, still Rajesh Roshan gave the music of the same intensity that RD's music had.

Nitin Mukesh who was leading a life of anonymity was picked up by Rajesh Roshan to lend voice to in KHUDGARZ, and after that there was no looking back for him for quite some time. Kishore Kumar's biggest tongue twisting song's, Jo Dekhen Jo chahen wo karke dikha dein from DO AUR DO PAANCH was also from the quiver of Rajesh Roshan. The music that he learned from his father Roshan he used in his career with great finesse, especially the classical music that he has given has a distinct Roshan taste. The touch of Roshan is also evident if one listens to his songs carefully, it would be found that interludes in his previous songs, find expression as a full-fledged song in a subsequent film, thereby signifying the rich resource base of music that he has at his command.

It is a loss of the Hindi film music that Rajesh Roshan now gives music only for the films produced by his brother Rakesh Roshan. In this age, where the music is more a product of computer keys and software it is the music of Rajesh Roshan that is needed to bring an influence of calmness which his music personifies.
